The ultimate mountain biking adventure, starting in the Alta Valley and continuing on the Finnmarksvidda mountain plateau!
After the first day planning, adjusting bikes etc, we spend five days enjoying gravel roads and single and double tracks in a never-ending gently rolling mountain plain landscape! Beautiful nature, rivers and lakes, cloudberries, the Midnight Sun and reindeer! We stay at traditional mountain lodges where we enjoy a relaxing sauna followed by good food accompanied by wine after several hours on the bike seat!
Long days
This is a demanding trip with relatively long days of up to 6-8 hours including a lunch break, in sometimes technical terrain. The distances vary from 30-45 km and the average speed ranges from 10-18 km/h.
Double and single tracks
Much of the trip is along the Sami people’s quad bike tracks, which means there are a lot of double tracks. The majority offer excellent cycling, while some sections are stony and relatively demanding. The trip also includes a series of marsh and river crossings, which involve carrying your bike. There are no major mountains to climb, but the mountain plain is by no means flat! This means you may climb 750-1 000 m in a day, which you will feel in your legs!
On our Skill and Fitness – scale this is a S5/F7-tour.
Much of the route is also used for both the 300 and 700 km sections of the Offroad Finnmark mountain bike race.
Demanding trip
The combination of relatively long distances and difficult terrain means all participants must be in relatively good shape and experienced mountain bikers.
Bike and equipment
A full suspension bike is preferable, ideally a 29er. The tyres should have relatively thick tread pattern and reinforced sidewalls, a la Schwalbe Hans Dampf and Maxxis Ardent, with good volume like 2.2″ or more.
If you do not have a full suspension bike but would like to try this trip, you may rent a suitable bike from us! Click here to read more about mountain bike rental.
Repairman and local guide
You will be joined on this adventure by a local cycling guide who has the main responsibility for safety and navigation. In addition to being well acquainted with the Finnmarksvidda mountain plain after several trips there, the guide is also a technically competent mountain biker and is able to repair many of the eventualities that can occur on such an expedition. Our guides are also hobby gourmets and it is not out of the question that a delicacy or two will be prepared on an open fire at lunch time!
Cool accommodation
Accommodation during the trip (day 1 to 6) is included in the tour price and will be in Glam lavvos at Holmen Husky Lodge in Alta, mountain lodges at Mollisjok and Jotka Fjellstue and, the cherry on the top, the wilderness camp in Masi.
If you plan to leave Alta on day 6, you will be able to catch departures after 6pm. We will of course get you to the airport in time. However, we recommend at least one additional night, at Holmen Husky Lodge or at a hotel in the City. We will help you arrange it!
Meals
All meals (a light meal the first evening to lunch day 6) are included. Beer/wine and soft drinks are additional.
Support
Partial support is included on this trip. In other words, your bag containing your personal belongings will be available after day 1 + 2 (Alta), day 4 (Masi) and day 5 (Jotka). The route can be subject to changes depending on weather and other conditions.
Transfers
We will pick you up at the airport on arrival, and get you back to the airport in time for your flight home.
If you would like to stay longer in Alta before or after the trip, we can help you to arrange this.
